A fridge or refrigerator cools by creating temperatures above the freezing point of the water. Some refrigerators are available without freezers; these have temperatures below the freezing point of water.

Household refrigerators were introduced in the 1920s. However, refrigerators had been in commercial use for 40 years before that. These used ammonia gas- which was considered to unsafe to be used inside a home-for cooling. Post 1920, non toxic, nonflammable and synthetic refrigerants such as the R-12 series are being used.

A few models of refrigerators have different temperature levels in special compartments to store various types of food. As per the metric system we follow (also in Europe), the capacity of a refrigerator is measured in litres.

Following are the types of refrigerators:

- freestanding

- counter/cabinet depth

- built under

- in column refrigerators or freezers

- mini fridge or a micro-fridge, with an attached compact microwaves oven.

Determine the size and power of the refrigerator you’d need before you buy one. Keep your budget in mind. Check whether you’d be using the refrigerator to store cooked food, fresh products, canned produce or dairy. Figure out of you’d need more shelves or simply a cavern-like space. If there’s a possibility of the refrigerator being opened very frequently (if there are children in the family, for instance), buy a model that has different temperature zones. Finally, measure the space that will ‘house’ the refrigerator.

Your selection will depend a lot on this factor. Disconnect the refrigerator from the electricity supply completely before cleaning. The interior as well as the exterior of the refrigerator can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth or sponge wipe. Detergents or soap may harm the surfaces. Please consult with your individual after sales service staff. Usually shelves are removable and washable with mild soapy water. They should be completely dried before being placed inside the chamber. Sometimes the drain pan at the bottom of the refrigerator will collect mold, or just smell bad. Simply remove the pan and clean it with soapy water. Dry thoroughly and replace.
